What is Fortnite?
If your kids say they're playing Fortnite, they're probably talking about Battle Royale, the free-to-play multiplayer offshoot of the action-strategy game Fortnite from developer Epic Games. This ultra-popular video game blends elements of sandbox building games with fast-paced action. It offers two modes: a solo version called Save the World and the multiplayer version called Battle Royale. Here at Modesto City Schools, we'll be running Fortnite competitions in Battle Royale, but we'll be using Team mode to encourage all the soft-skills that esports builds.
How does Modesto City Schools run Fortnite?
Here at Modesto City Schools, we believe in the value of team-based competition in esports and enjoy the rivalries that develop between schools. We structure our Fortnite matches to meet those values. Modesto City Schools creates and shares a custom lobby key that only our students can use to join the MCS-hosted matches. With the custom key, lobbies are kept private to just Modesto schools. Lobbies can accommodate up to 25 teams of four, giving every high school a chance for three teams to compete at a time. We want to ensure every student who is interested gets a chance, so we can run multiple matches to rotate teams of students in and out. Please be sure your student has their game pass, so they can join in the fun.
Why is my kid so interested in playing Fortnite?
Kids love Fortnite for lots of reasons. One is that it combines two other genres that are big winners with young gamers. Another is that it has a more cartoonish look than some other more gory video games, so younger gamers are drawn to it.
Kids can play with friends in Duos, Trios, and Teams, creating a more social element. And popular gamers like play the game on streaming sites like YouTube and Twitch. Plus, in the case of the Battle Royale mode, it's free to play.
Are there parental controls for Fortnite?
Yes, adults can restrict some features on their child's account. You can manage permissions for friend requests, voice and text chat, content ratings, and filters for mature language. Parents and caregivers can also set up passwords for in-game spending. When you enable this option, the Parental Control PIN will be required for all purchases. Accounts for users under 18 also have privacy settings turned on by default.
I have some concerns. What are the benefits of playing Fortnite (and other team-based games?)
Esports is a growing industry with lots of benefits for students. Immediate benefits include:
Learning teamwork and communication
Developing strategic thinking
Improving cognitive abilities such as spatial awareness and decision-making
Boosting reading and phonics skills
Esports also offers long-term benefits and opportunities. Colleges offer scholarships for esports athletes. The esports industry is growing and offers all kinds of careers outside of competition. Potential fields include: commentators, event managers, journalists, content creators, photographers, coaches, market experts, and more. Getting students involved in esports is a great way to develop their soft and hard skills and could set them up for future success.
